Why compounding
The dose your prescriber wants isn't always a dose anyone manufactures. The pill might only come in 10 mg when you need 4. Or it has a dye you react to, or it's a tablet your kid won't swallow.
So we make yours ourselves, at your strength, in a form you can actually take: a cream, a lozenge, a liquid, or a capsule without the filler that gives you trouble.
This is not your traditional pharmacy. In Iowa, our pharmacist can review your labs, write a prescription if you need one, and run the lab that makes it.
Compounded medications are prepared for one patient at a time, from a valid prescription, and are not FDA approved. Use them as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

For providersCommon questions
A compounding pharmacy makes medications from scratch for one patient at a time, instead of dispensing what a manufacturer already produced. We do that here, at our lab in Iowa City, when the dose, the form, or the ingredients you need are not something you can buy off a shelf. Compounded medications are prepared from a valid prescription and are not FDA approved.
Yes, in Iowa. Aaron McDonough, Pharm.D., holds the credentials that let a pharmacist write prescriptions, not only fill them. Prescribing services are available only to patients located in Iowa. A consultation does not guarantee that a prescription will be issued.
